Push through the day on caffeine and willpower…
And crawl into bed wondering why your energy disappeared years ago?
If this sounds familiar, please hear this first: you’re not lazy, and you’re not imagining it.
Chronic fatigue is one of the most common reasons patients come to see me—and too often, they’ve already been told, “Your labs are normal.”
But “normal” doesn’t always mean optimal.
In functional medicine, we look deeper. Fatigue is rarely the problem—it’s the signal. And the right labs can help us uncover why your body is struggling.
If you’re tired of feeling tired, these are the first five labs I recommend starting with.
1. Comprehensive Thyroid Panel (Not Just TSH)
Your thyroid is your body’s metabolic engine. When it’s underperforming, everything slows down—energy, mood, metabolism, even brain clarity.
Many patients are only tested with TSH, which tells just one small part of the story. A complete thyroid panel looks at how well your thyroid hormones are being made, converted, and used by your cells.
When thyroid function is even slightly off, fatigue is often one of the first symptoms.
2. Iron Studies (Including Ferritin)
Low iron doesn’t always mean anemia—but it can absolutely drain your energy.
Ferritin measures your iron storage, and I frequently see patients—especially women—whose ferritin is technically “normal” but far from ideal. The result?
✔️ Exhaustion
✔️ Shortness of breath with exertion
✔️ Hair thinning
✔️ Feeling wiped out after simple tasks
Your body can’t make energy efficiently without enough iron on board.
3. Vitamin B12 and Folate
These nutrients are essential for:
- Energy production
- Brain function
- Nerve health
Low levels can show up as fatigue, brain fog, tingling, memory issues, or mood changes. And here’s the key—absorption matters. Even if you eat well or take supplements, your body may not be properly absorbing what it needs.
We test to be sure.
4. Vitamin D
Vitamin D is more than a “bone vitamin.” It plays a major role in immune health, inflammation control, hormone balance, and yes—energy.
Low vitamin D levels are incredibly common and often overlooked. When levels are suboptimal, patients frequently report:
- Persistent fatigue
- Low mood
- Muscle aches
- Increased illness
Optimizing vitamin D can be a powerful (and simple) step toward feeling better.
5. Cortisol (Adrenal Function)
If you feel “wired but tired,” crash in the afternoon, or struggle with sleep despite exhaustion, your stress hormones may be part of the picture.
Cortisol follows a daily rhythm—and when that rhythm is disrupted, energy suffers. Chronic stress, inflammation, poor sleep, and unresolved illness can all throw this system off balance.
Understanding how your body responds to stress helps us support it—rather than pushing it harder.
Fatigue Is a Clue—Not a Life Sentence
These five labs are often just the beginning, but they provide a powerful foundation. When we listen to your symptoms and pair them with the right testing, patterns emerge—and healing becomes possible.
You deserve more than being told to “get more sleep” or “drink more coffee.”
You deserve answers.
You deserve personalized care.
And you deserve to feel like yourself again.
If you’re ready to stop guessing and start understanding your body, we’re here to help you thrive—not just survive.
🌿 Your health, reimagined.
